Maria Johanna Schouten

Prior to retirement, I was on the staff of the Department of Sociology, University of Beira Interior, Covilhã, Portugal. I have academic qualifications (MA) in Anthropology and History, and a PhD in Social and Cultural Sciences conferred by VU University, Amsterdam. At the University of Beira Interior I obtained the degree of «Agregada» in Sociology. For almost half a century, a major part of my research activities has focused on Southeast Asia. This included anthropological fieldwork in Minahasa (northern Sulawesi, Indonesia) and research of historic documents, in combination with the study of Dutch and Portuguese colonialism with special attention for eastern Indonesia and Timor-Leste.
